Box multiplication

keynotes :

Box multiplication is a method of multiplying numbers by breaking them into place values and arranging them in a box/grid.
It helps to see how each part of the numbers multiplies and then adds together to get the final answer.

  • Break the numbers into place values (tens, ones, hundreds, etc.).
  • Draw a box/grid and write one number across the top and the other down the side.
  • Multiply each part and write the product in the correct box.
  • Add all the products together to get the final answer.

Step 1: Break numbers

  • 23 = 20 + 3
  • 45 = 40 + 5

Step 2: Draw the box

203
40800120
510015

Step 3: Add all products
800 + 120 + 100 + 15 = 1035

✅ Answer: 23 × 45 = 1035

Step 1: Break numbers

  • 326 = 300 + 20 + 6
  • 14 = 10 + 4

Step 2: Draw the box

300206
10300020060
412008024

Step 3: Add all products
3000 + 200 + 60 + 1200 + 80 + 24 = 4564

✅ Answer: 326 × 14 = 4564

  • Always break numbers into place values.
  • Keep numbers neatly in the box to avoid mistakes.
  • Finally, add all partial products to get the final result.
  • This method makes multiplication easier and more organized.

Learn with an example

😀 Use the box method to find 87×15.
Calculate the sums on the right. Add these sums to find 87×15.
87×15 = ?,???

Step 1

To multiply two numbers using the box method, make a table with the place values of the first factor along the top and the place values of the second factor down the left.

Step 2

Multiply the place values and enter their products in the table.

Simplify the table.

Step 3

Sum each row of the table.

Step 4
Add these row sums. This is the product of the original factors.
870 + 435 = 1,305
So, 87 × 15 = 1,305.

😀 Use the box method to find 38×50.
Calculate the sums on the right. Add these sums to find 38×50.
38×50 = ?,???

1,900+0=1,900
So, 38×50=1,900.

😀 Use the box method to find 81×83.
Calculate the sums on the right. Add these sums to find 81×83.
81×83 = ?,???

6,480+243=6,723
So, 81×83=6,723.
