Estimate products
Key notes :
🔹 What is Estimation? |
Estimation means finding a number close to the exact answer. It helps us do calculations quickly and check if our answers make sense.
🔹 Estimating Products |
When we estimate products, we do not multiply exactly. Instead, we round the numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds, or thousands, and then multiply.
🔹 Steps to Estimate Products |
- Look at the numbers.
- Round each number to the nearest 10, 100, or 1000.
- Multiply the rounded numbers.
- The answer is the estimated product.
🔹 Examples |
- Exact multiplication:
- 47×32=150447 \times 32 = 150447×32=1504 Estimation:
- Round 47≈5047 \approx 5047≈50, 32≈3032 \approx 3032≈30
- 50×30=150050 \times 30 = 150050×30=1500 ✅ Estimated product = 1500
- Example with larger numbers:
- 456×298456 \times 298456×298 Round 456≈500456 \approx 500456≈500, 298≈300298 \approx 300298≈300
- 500×300=150,000500 \times 300 = 150,000500×300=150,000 ✅ Estimated product = 150,000
🔹 Why is Estimating Products Important? |
✔ Saves time in daily life.
✔ Helps in mental math.
✔ Useful for checking if exact answers are reasonable.
✔ Needed in shopping, budgeting, construction, and measurements.
🔹 Quick Practice |
Estimate the following:
- 68×4168 \times 4168×41
- 123×397123 \times 397123×397
- 789×212789 \times 212789×212
👉 Key Tip: Always round numbers to the place value that makes multiplication easier.
Learn with an example
😀 Estimate the product. Round each factor to the nearest ten, then multiply.
25 × 21
The product is approximately ________.
Round the first factor to the nearest ten.

Round the second factor to the nearest ten.

Now multiply:
30 × 20 = 600
The product is approximately 600.
Compare your estimate to the exact answer:
25 × 21 = 525
😀 Estimate the product. Round each factor to the nearest ten, then multiply.
36 × 76
The product is approximately _______.
Round the first factor to the nearest ten.

Round the second factor to the nearest ten.

Now multiply:
40 × 80 = 3,200
The product is approximately 3,200.
Compare your estimate to the exact answer:
36 × 76 = 2,736
😀 Estimate the product. Round each factor to the nearest ten, then multiply.
35 × 59
The product is approximately ________.
Round the first factor to the nearest ten.

Round the second factor to the nearest ten.

Now multiply:
40 × 60 = 2,400
The product is approximately 2,400.
Compare your estimate to the exact answer:
35 × 59 = 2,065
