Meteors are small chunks of rock that enter Earth’s atmosphere and begin to burn up. When they burn up, they leave a trail of light behind them. If you’ve ever seen a ‘shooting star’, what you saw wasn’t a star at all—it was actually a meteor! Usually, meteors burn up before they reach the ground. If they reach the ground, they are called meteorites.
