Determine the order of events in informational texts

Key Notes :

To understand a series of events, ideas or steps, you have to think about the order in which things happen.

As you read, one thing to look for is words that show time, such as next, later, after, already and then. These words can help you see what happens first, what happens in the middle and what happens last.

Before he designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Gustave Eiffel worked on another famous project. When the engineer working on the Statue of Liberty died suddenly in 1879, Eiffel took over its completion. Eiffel’s team finished building the Statue of Liberty in France and then took it apart so it could be shipped to New York.

The Spanish explorer Vicente Pinz贸n played a part in Christopher Columbus’s famous first trip to North America. Pinz贸n commanded the Ni帽a, one of the three ships on that expedition. Eight years later, Pinz贸n led a journey to the northeastern coast of South America. He was possibly the first European to set eyes on the country later known as Brazil. After sailing down the Brazilian coast, Pinz贸n explored the Amazon River.

In 1868, the United States signed a treaty at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. The treaty said the Black Hills of South Dakota belonged to the Sioux people, a Native American tribe. In 1874, however, gold was discovered in the Black Hills. Three years later, the US government broke its treaty and took the land away from the Sioux.
