Kala’s Seaside Restaurant
It was early for dinner, but all of the floating tables at Kala’s were already full. Lani, who waited tables at her grandmother’s restaurant, paddled a canoe to one of the tables bobbing offshore.
‘Tell Kala that this coconut tart was tasty, as usual!’ said a mermaid when Lani collected her empty plate.
Lani rowed back to shore. ‘Grandma, have you ever thought of making mango tart instead?’ she asked Kala. ‘It might be easier than cracking so many coconuts open for coconut tart.’
Kala shook her head firmly before Lani had even finished speaking.
For generations, the restaurant had prepared food from the land for the merfolk to enjoy, using only Kala’s family’s recipes. During her years as the owner, Kala had kept the menu exactly the same.
‘We have been making coconut tart for years, Lani!’ she said. ‘Why would we do something different now?’
