The Glass Studio

‘What do you think, Gabriella?’ asked Dad.

I spun in a slow circle, surrounded by dazzling pieces of glass art. ‘I think . . . I’m in a kaleidoscope.’

Dad laughed and held up a glass dolphin. ‘I meant what do you think of this? Would Carmen like it?’

The dolphin was beautiful, the colour of the sea, but it wasn’t exactly right. I shook my head.

‘We need to choose something,’ Dad said.

We’d already been to every other shop in the city centre, searching for a farewell present for my sister. She was leaving for art school next week.

Gwen’s Glass Gallery was our last chance. The shop must have just opened; it hadn’t been here the last time I was in the city centre. It was small but filled with light and colour. My eyes roamed over the glass animals, the hanging wind chimes and the graceful vases. Nothing seemed exactly right for Carmen.
