Good Science
Russell breathed deeply, enjoying Science Fest’s complicated aroma of vinegar, sulphur and cardboard. He propped open his solar oven, adding its faintly eggy smell to the mix.
His friend Marco stood on tiptoe. ‘I don’t see her,’ he said.
Backing up his wheelchair, Russell glimpsed a large purple beaker embroidered on the back of a white lab coat. ‘I see the beaker,’ he told Marco. ‘It’s definitely Christina the Chemist.’
Marco laughed. ‘Dr Calloway, you mean.’
Russell laughed, too. ‘After four years of watching her show, it’s hard not to call her Christina the Chemist. I could whistle the theme song in my sleep.’
‘You could do the experiments in your sleep.’
Russell grinned. He loved Dr Calloway’s show and often spent hours repeating a single experiment, changing different things each time. For months, he’d worked on his oven in the same way. Some evenings, he’d been so focused on the materials and measurements that he’d nearly missed dinner.
