Adjectives are words that describe nouns. Sometimes, we use more than one adjective to describe a noun. โœ… But in English, adjectives follow a special order.

When using more than one adjective, we usually follow this order:

1. Opinion โ€“ what you think about something ๐Ÿ˜/๐Ÿ˜’

  • Example: beautiful, ugly, nice, horrible

2. Size โ€“ how big or small something is ๐Ÿ“

  • Example: big, small, tiny, huge

3. Age โ€“ how old something is โณ

  • Example: new, old, young, ancient

4. Shape โ€“ the shape of the object ๐Ÿ”บโšช

  • Example: round, square, oval, rectangular

5. Color โ€“ the color of the object ๐ŸŽจ

  • Example: red, blue, green, yellow

6. Origin โ€“ where it comes from ๐ŸŒ

  • Example: Indian, Chinese, American

7. Material โ€“ what it is made of ๐Ÿชต๐Ÿงต

  • Example: wooden, cotton, silver, plastic

8. Purpose / Qualifier โ€“ what it is used for ๐ŸŽฏ

  • Example: sleeping (bag), running (shoes), writing (pen)

  1. A beautiful small old round red Indian wooden table ๐Ÿช‘
  2. A nice big new square blue plastic box ๐Ÿ“ฆ
  3. An ancient tiny oval golden locket ๐Ÿ’
  • โŒ Wrong: A red beautiful big ball
  • โœ”๏ธ Right: A beautiful big red ball
  • โŒ Wrong: A cotton old white shirt
  • โœ”๏ธ Right: An old white cotton shirt
  • Adjectives of same kind: Use commas between them.
  • Example: A long, narrow, dark tunnel ๐ŸŒ‘
  • Do not mix up the usual order; it sounds unnatural!
