Order adjectives

Key Notes:

1. What are Adjectives?

  • Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns.
  • They provide more information about the noun, such as size, color, shape, quantity, etc.

2. Order of Adjectives

When using multiple adjectives to describe a noun, they should be placed in a specific order. The general order is:

  1. Quantity or Number: (e.g., two, several)
  2. Opinion: (e.g., beautiful, interesting)
  3. Size: (e.g., big, small)
  4. Age: (e.g., young, old)
  5. Shape: (e.g., round, square)
  6. Color: (e.g., red, blue)
  7. Origin: (e.g., American, French)
  8. Material: (e.g., wooden, plastic)
  9. Purpose: (e.g., sleeping (as in sleeping bag), cooking (as in cooking pot))

3. Example of Adjective Order

  • Correct Order: “I have a few beautiful small old round blue American wooden cooking boxes.”
  • Incorrect Order: “I have a blue round old small few wooden beautiful cooking box.”

4. Using Commas

  • When listing three or more adjectives that are equal in rank (e.g., opinion, size, color), separate them with commas.
  • Example: “It’s a beautiful, large, red balloon.”

5. Exceptions

  • Coordinate Adjectives: When two adjectives are equally important and modify the same noun, use a comma.
  • Example: “It was a long, tiring journey.”
  • If the adjectives cannot be rearranged without changing the meaning, they are considered coordinate adjectives.
