Timbuktu is an old city on the edge of the Sahara Desert in West Africa. In the fourteenth century, Timbuktu was a centre of trade and learning. It was a popular stopping place for traders travelling across the desert. Three great mosques, or Muslim houses of worship, were built there. People came from all over the world to study in the city. Today, many students travel to Asia to study. Recently, the United Nations has worked to preserve and restore Timbuktu’s historic structures.
