In high school, William Carlos Williams decided to become both a doctor and a poet. He went to medical school and worked all his life as a doctor. But he continued to write, and he often jotted down poems in between seeing patients. He published many poems from the 1910s to the 1960s. An American poet named Edna St Vincent Millay also wrote during this time period. Williams worked on a new form of American poetry—poems about everyday life. Among Williams’s most famous poems are ‘This is Just to Say’ and ‘The Red Wheelbarrow’.
