How did the Canary Islands get their name? The name didn’t come from the little yellow birds on the islands. In fact, the birds got their name from the islands, not the other way around. Though people have different opinions, the most common belief is that the Canary Islands were actually named after dogs. It was the Romans who first visited these islands, giving them the Latin name Insulia Canaria. This translates to ‘Island of Dogs’. Some say that the Romans named the islands for the big dogs they found roaming there. Others believe that the ‘dogs’ on the islands weren’t the kinds of dogs we know today. Rather, the animals may have actually been a type of seal, which sailors used to call ‘sea dogs’. __________
