key notes :

What is a Fraction?

  • A fraction shows part of a whole.
  • Example: ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ โ†’ 2/4 apples are red.
  • Numerator (top number) โ†’ parts we have.
  • Denominator (bottom number) โ†’ total equal parts.

Types of Fractions

  • Proper Fraction: numerator < denominator โœ… (3/4)
  • Improper Fraction: numerator โ‰ฅ denominator โŒ (5/4)
  • Mixed Number: whole number + proper fraction (1 1/4)
  • Equivalent Fractions: same value, different look (1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8) ๐Ÿ”„

Comparing Fractions

  • Make denominators the same to compare ๐ŸŸฐ
  • Bigger numerator โ†’ bigger fraction (if denominator same) โฌ†๏ธ

Adding & Subtracting Fractions โž•โž–

  • Same denominator: add/subtract numerators (3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8)
  • Different denominator: find LCM first (1/4 + 1/6 โ†’ 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12)

Multiplying Fractions โœ–๏ธ

  • Multiply numerator ร— numerator & denominator ร— denominator
  • Example: 2/3 ร— 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2 โœ…

Dividing Fractions โž—

  • Flip the second fraction (reciprocal) and multiply
  • Example: 2/3 รท 4/5 = 2/3 ร— 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6 ๐Ÿ”„

Simplifying Fractions ๐Ÿงน

  • Divide numerator and denominator by their GCD
  • Example: 8/12 โ†’ divide both by 4 โ†’ 2/3

Fractions to Decimals & Percentages ๐Ÿ’ฏ

  • Divide numerator รท denominator โ†’ decimal
  • Decimal ร— 100 โ†’ percentage
  • Example: 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

Fun Fraction Facts ๐ŸŽ‰

  • 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4 ๐Ÿฐ
  • Fractions are everywhere: pizza, money, time, recipes ๐Ÿ•’๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’ฐ
