Patterns of equivalent fractions

Key Notes :

Equivalent fractions

Equivalent fractions are fractions that have different numerators and denominators but are equal to the same value.

What are equivalent fractions?

Equivalent fractions are fractions that show the same amount. For example, the fractions 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 are all equivalent fractions. Look at the models to see why.

Models showing one half, two fourths, and three sixths of a circle filled in.

Equivalent fractions with number lines

You can show equivalent fractions on number lines, too. The fractions 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 are all equivalent. They are all halfway between 0 and 1.

How can you find equivalent fractions?

To find an equivalent fraction, multiply or divide the top and bottom of a fraction by the same number!

For example, if you multiply the top and bottom of 3/4 by 2, you get the equivalent fraction 6/8.

For another example, if you divide the top and bottom of 16/24 by 8, you get the equivalent fraction 2/3.

🥏Fun Fact

When you find the simplest form of a fraction, you are finding an equivalent fraction!

Learn with an example

😐 Type the missing number to complete the equivalent fraction.

1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12 = 5/__ = 6/18

Start with 1/3 . Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number to find equivalent fractions.

Now complete the equivalent fraction.

1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12 = 5/15 = 6/18

😐 Type the missing number to complete the equivalent fraction.

1/4 = 2/8 = 3/__ = 4/16 = 5/20 = 6/24

Start with 1/4 ,  Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number to find equivalent fractions.

Now complete the equivalent fraction.

1/4 = 2/8 = 3/12 = 4/16 = 5/20 = 6/24

😐 Type the missing number to complete the equivalent fraction.

1/6 = 2/12 = 3/___ = 4/24 = 5/30 = 6/36

Start with 1/ 6 . Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number to find equivalent fractions.

Now complete the equivalent fraction.

1/6 = 2/12 = 3/18 = 4/24 = 5/30 = 6/36
