Create stem-and-leaf plots
Key Notes :
Introduction to Stem-and-Leaf Plots:
- A stem-and-leaf plot is a way to display data where each number is split into two parts: the stem (the first digit or digits) and the leaf (the last digit).
- Example: For the number 47, 4 is the stem and 7 is the leaf.
Purpose:
- Stem-and-leaf plots organize data and make it easier to see the distribution and pattern of numbers.
- They show the shape of the data and help identify the median, range, and mode.
Steps to Create a Stem-and-Leaf Plot:
- Step 1: Organize the data: Arrange the numbers in ascending order.
- Step 2: Identify the stem: The stem is made up of all the digits except the last one (tens digit for two-digit numbers).
- Step 3: Identify the leaf: The leaf is the last digit (ones digit).
- Step 4: Create the plot: Write the stems in a column and list the leaves next to the corresponding stems.
Interpreting Stem-and-Leaf Plots:
- You can easily see the frequency of numbers within a range.
- The stem shows the tens place, and the leaf shows the ones place, making it easier to analyze the data.
Learn with an example
🛑 Mr. Kelly, a P.E. teacher, wrote down how much weight each of his students could lift.
Weight lifted (lbs)
11 11 11 13 21 24 27 29 29 30 30 31 32 33 34 35 35 35 36 37 37 40 43 45
Use the data to complete the stem-and-leaf plot.

The stem in the missing row is 2.
Write the leaves 1, 4, 7, 9, and 9 in this row to represent the numbers 21, 24, 27, 29, and 29.

🛑 An architecture student measured the heights of all the buildings downtown.
Building heights (metres)
22 23 25 28 31 37 37 38 42 43 49 52 56 56 64 68 69 76 79 89 90 93 98 98 99
Use the data to complete the stem-and-leaf plot.

The stem in the missing row is 4.
Write the leaves 2, 3, and 9 in this row to represent the numbers 42, 43, and 49.

🛑 Noah counted the number of peanuts in each bag of trail mix.
Peanuts per bag
40 51 59 61 68 75 77 79 85 93
Use the data to complete the stem-and-leaf plot.

The stem in the missing row is 5.
Write the leaves 1 and 9 in this row to represent the numbers 51 and 59.
