Metric mixed units
key notes :
What Are Metric Mixed Units?
Metric mixed units are measurements that combine two metric units for the same quantity.
Example:
- 1 meter 45 centimeters (1 m 45 cm)
- 3 kilograms 200 grams (3 kg 200 g)
Why Use Mixed Units?
- Sometimes measurements don’t fit exactly into one unit.
- Mixed units help express measurements more precisely and understandably.
Common Metric Mixed Units
- Length: meters and centimeters (m and cm)
- Mass (Weight): kilograms and grams (kg and g)
- Capacity (Volume): liters and milliliters (L and mL)
Conversion Basics
- 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)
- 1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g)
- 1 liter (L) = 1,000 milliliters (mL)
Reading Mixed Units
Read the larger unit first, followed by the smaller unit.
- Example: “2 m 30 cm” means 2 meters and 30 centimeters.
Adding Mixed Units
Add same units separately, convert if necessary.
- Example:
- 2 kg 700 g + 1 kg 500 g =
- (2 + 1) kg and (700 + 500) g =
- 3 kg 1200 g → 4 kg 200 g (because 1000 g = 1 kg)
Subtracting Mixed Units
Subtract the smaller units first. If needed, borrow from the larger unit.
- Example:
- 5 L 300 mL – 2 L 600 mL =
- Convert 1 L to 1000 mL:
- 4 L 1300 mL – 2 L 600 mL = 2 L 700 mL
Real-Life Applications
Used in measuring:
- Height (e.g., 1 m 75 cm)
- Cooking ingredients (e.g., 1 kg 250 g of sugar)
- Water bottles (e.g., 1 L 500 mL)
Learn with an example
📢 Convert. Write your answer as a decimal.
1 cm 5 mm = _______ cm
Convert the 5 millimetres to centimetres.
Divide:
5 ÷ 10 = 0.5
5 mm = 0.5 cm
Now add this to the centimetre you already have:
1 cm 5 mm = 1 cm + 0.5 cm
1 cm 5 mm = 1.5 cm
📢 Convert: 7 m 65 cm = ______ cm
Convert the 7 metres to centimetres.
Multiply:
7 × 100 = 700
7 m = 700 cm
Now add this to the 65 centimetres you already have:
7 m 65 cm = 700 cm + 65 cm
7 m 65 cm = 765 cm
📢 Convert: 943 cm = ___ m _____ cm
Find out how many metres are in 943 centimetres.
Divide:
943 ÷ 100 = 9 R43
There are 9 metres, with 43 centimetres left over.
943 cm = 9 m 43 cm
