Area of squares and rectangles

Key Notes :

Definition of Area: Area is the measure of the amount of space a shape covers. For squares and rectangles, it is measured in square units, such as square centimeters (cm²) or square meters (m²).

Formulas:

  • Square: Area = side length × side length (or Area = side²)
  • Rectangle: Area = length × width

Calculation:

  • For a Square: Measure the length of one side and multiply it by itself to find the area.
  • For a Rectangle : Measure the length and width, then multiply these measurements together to find the area.

Learn with an example

▶️ What is the area?

______  square kilometres

Find the base and height of the rectangle.

base: 11 km
height: 22 km

Use these numbers in the formula.

Area = base × height
= 11 × 22
= 242

Now find the units. The lengths are measured in kilometres, so the area is measured in square kilometres.

The area is 242 square kilometres.

▶️ What is the area?

____  square kilometres

Find the base and height of the rectangle.

base: 14 km
height: 12 km

Use these numbers in the formula.

Area = base × height
= 14 × 12
= 168

Now find the units. The lengths are measured in kilometres, so the area is measured in square kilometres.

The area is 168 square kilometres.

▶️ What is the area?

_____  square metres

Find the base and height of the rectangle.

base: 18 m
height: 11 m

Use these numbers in the formula.

Area = base × height
= 18 × 11
= 198

Now find the units. The lengths are measured in metres, so the area is measured in square metres.

The area is 198 square metres.
