What Does Air Contain?

Detailed Notes: Air & Water (Part 1)

Key Notes

1. Air is a Mixture: Air is a mixture of gases that surround the Earth. It’s a combination of different substances.

2. Major Components: The two major components of air are nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the air, while oxygen makes up about 21%.

3. Other Gases:

  • In addition to nitrogen and oxygen, air also contains small amounts of other gases, such as carbon dioxide (about 0.04%), argon, and trace amounts of other gases like neon and helium.
  • Other gases such as Neon, Hydrogen, water vapor, etc. are also present in small quantities.

4. Importance of Oxygen: Oxygen is essential for living organisms. We breathe in oxygen from the air, and it is used by our bodies to produce energy.

5. Role of Nitrogen: Nitrogen is not used by most living things directly, but it plays a vital role in the Earth’s atmosphere, maintaining atmospheric pressure and diluting oxygen to safe levels for breathing.

6. Carbon Dioxide: Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas present in small amounts in the air. It’s important for photosynthesis in plants, but too much of it in the atmosphere can contribute to global warming.

7. Water Vapor: Air also contains water vapor, especially in humid conditions. Water vapor plays a significant role in weather and can form clouds and precipitation.

8. Pollutants: In addition to natural gases, air can also contain pollutants from human activities, such as smog, which is a combination of smoke and fog. These pollutants can be harmful to both the environment and human health.

9. Clean Air: Clean air is essential for our health and the environment. It’s important to reduce air pollution and take steps to improve air quality.

10. Air Composition Varies: The composition of air can vary slightly depending on location and conditions. For example, at high altitudes, the proportion of oxygen is lower.
