Conditions On The Moon
Key Notes:
No Atmosphere
- The Moon has no air or atmosphere.
- There is no oxygen to breathe and no weather like rain or wind.
Extreme Temperatures
- Very hot during the day (up to 127°C).
- Very cold at night (down to -173°C).
- Because there’s no atmosphere, heat is not held in.
No Water
- There are no rivers, lakes, or oceans.
- Some frozen water has been found in deep craters.
No Life
- Since there is no air or water, no plants, animals, or people live there.
Low Gravity
- The Moon’s gravity is weaker than Earth’s (about 1/6th).
- This means things weigh less, and people can jump higher.
Surface Features
- The Moon’s surface has craters, mountains, and plains.
- Craters were made by asteroids and meteoroids hitting the Moon.
No Sound
- Because there’s no air, sound cannot travel on the Moon.
Day and Night Last Long
- One day on the Moon is about 29.5 Earth days.
- That means a very long day and night.
