The Muscular System
Key Notes:
What is the Muscular System?

- The muscular system consists of muscles that allow movement in the human body.
- Muscles work by contracting (tightening) and relaxing.
Types of Muscles

There are three main types of muscles in the body:
- Skeletal Muscles: Attached to bones and help in movement (voluntary control).
- Smooth Muscles: Found in internal organs like the stomach and intestines (involuntary control).
- Cardiac Muscle: Found only in the heart, helps pump blood (involuntary control).
Voluntary vs. Involuntary Muscles

- Voluntary muscles are muscles we control, like those in our arms and legs.
- Involuntary muscles work automatically without us thinking about it, like the heart.
How Muscles Work with Bones
- Muscles are attached to bones by tendons.
- They work in pairs; when one muscle contracts (shortens), the other relaxes, allowing movement (e.g., biceps and triceps).
Importance of Muscles
- Muscles allow us to perform daily activities like walking, talking, and eating.
- Muscles also help in maintaining posture and producing heat to keep the body warm.
Caring for Your Muscles
- Regular exercise keeps muscles strong and healthy.
- Eating a balanced diet rich in proteins helps muscle growth and repair.
- Rest is important for muscle recovery after physical activity.
