The Muscular System

Key Notes:

What is the Muscular System?

  • The muscular system consists of muscles that allow movement in the human body.
  • Muscles work by contracting (tightening) and relaxing.

Types of Muscles

There are three main types of muscles in the body:

  • Skeletal Muscles: Attached to bones and help in movement (voluntary control).
  • Smooth Muscles: Found in internal organs like the stomach and intestines (involuntary control).
  • Cardiac Muscle: Found only in the heart, helps pump blood (involuntary control).

Voluntary vs. Involuntary Muscles

  • Voluntary muscles are muscles we control, like those in our arms and legs.
  • Involuntary muscles work automatically without us thinking about it, like the heart.

How Muscles Work with Bones

  • Muscles are attached to bones by tendons.
  • They work in pairs; when one muscle contracts (shortens), the other relaxes, allowing movement (e.g., biceps and triceps).

Importance of Muscles

  • Muscles allow us to perform daily activities like walking, talking, and eating.
  • Muscles also help in maintaining posture and producing heat to keep the body warm.

Caring for Your Muscles

  • Regular exercise keeps muscles strong and healthy.
  • Eating a balanced diet rich in proteins helps muscle growth and repair.
  • Rest is important for muscle recovery after physical activity.
