First Aid

Detailed Notes: Safety & First Aid (Part -2)

Key Notes:

What is First Aid?

  • First aid is the immediate help given to someone who is injured or sick before professional medical help arrives.
  • It aims to prevent the condition from worsening and to promote recovery.

Importance of First Aid

  • Helps save lives in emergencies.
  • Provides basic care until professional help arrives.
  • Reduces the risk of infection or further injury.

Basic First Aid Kit

  • A basic first aid kit should include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, scissors, tweezers, gauze pads, and a thermometer.

Common First Aid Procedures

  • Cuts and Scrapes: Clean the wound with water, apply antiseptic, and cover it with a bandage.
  • Burns: Cool the burn under running water for 10-15 minutes and cover with a sterile dressing. Do not apply ice.
  • Nosebleeds: Tilt the head slightly forward, pinch the nostrils for 10 minutes, and breathe through the mouth.
  • Choking: Use back blows and abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich maneuver) to dislodge an object blocking the airway.
  • Sprains: Rest the injured area, apply ice, compress it with a bandage, and elevate the limb (RICE method).

Calling for Help

  • In case of a serious injury or illness, call emergency services.
  • Provide clear information about the situation and the location.

Staying Calm

  • Remain calm in an emergency to help the injured person feel safe.
  • Encourage others to stay calm as well.

Personal Safety

  • Always ensure your own safety before helping someone.
  • Wear gloves if possible to prevent infections.

When to Seek Professional Help

  • If someone is unconscious, having difficulty breathing, or has severe injuries, call for medical assistance immediately.
