We&#8217;re focusing on five super common prefixes: <strong>un-, dis-, in-, im-, and non-<\/strong>. They all have a similar job: to turn a word into its opposite or show that something is <em>not<\/em> a certain way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Un- Prefix<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The prefix <strong>un-<\/strong> usually means &#8216;not&#8217; or &#8216;the opposite of.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Happy<\/strong> means feeling good.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unhappy<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> happy or sad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some more examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Kind<\/strong> means caring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unkind<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> caring or mean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lock<\/strong> means to fasten with a lock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unlock<\/strong> means to open a lock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tidy<\/strong> means neat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Untidy<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> neat or messy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Dis- Prefix<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The prefix <strong>dis-<\/strong> also means &#8216;not&#8217; or &#8216;the opposite of,&#8217; but it can also mean &#8216;to undo&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Connect<\/strong> means to join together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disconnect<\/strong> means to <em>not<\/em> connect or to separate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Agree<\/strong> means to have the same opinion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disagree<\/strong> means to <em>not<\/em> have the same opinion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Appear<\/strong> means to become visible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disappear<\/strong> means to vanish or <em>not<\/em> be visible anymore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Obey<\/strong> means to follow the rules<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disobey<\/strong> means to not follow the rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>In- and Im- Prefixes<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The prefixes <strong>in-<\/strong> and <strong>im-<\/strong> also mean &#8216;not&#8217;. The prefix you use depends on the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Complete<\/strong> means finished or whole.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Incomplete<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> finished or missing something.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Possible<\/strong> means able to be done.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impossible<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> able to be done.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Visible<\/strong> means able to be seen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Invisible<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> able to be seen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Patient<\/strong> means able to wait calmly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impatient<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> able to wait calmly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Proper<\/strong> means correct or appropriate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improper<\/strong> means not correct or not appropriate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 <em>Important Note: &#8216;im-&#8216; is usually used before words starting with &#8216;m&#8217; or &#8216;p&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Non- Prefix<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The prefix <strong>non-<\/strong> means &#8216;not&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stop<\/strong> means to cease moving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nonstop<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> stopping or continuous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fiction<\/strong> means a made-up story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nonfiction<\/strong> means a story that is real and based on facts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sense<\/strong> means logical or reasonable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nonsense<\/strong> means without logic or silly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stick<\/strong> means adhesive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nonstick<\/strong> means <em>not<\/em> adhesive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Practice Time!<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s see if you can use what we learned.
